"Locanda dei Fattori" is settled in the extent of
Villa Torlonia, an estate with a considerable historic and
architectonic interest.
In 1828 the Papal States make over the large estate called
La Torre (The Tower) after the name of the aristocratic villa
standing in the middle of the estate, to Princes Torlonia
family, who turns it into an exemplary farm which keeps flourishing
till the Second World War.
"La Torre" is closely linked to the memory of the
poet Giovanni Pascoli, who lived here during the happy years
of his childhood till his father Ruggero's death, who at that
time was the estate administrator, murdered in mysterious
circumstances in 1867. In the middle of the 20th century Princes
Torlonia's inheritors sell the estate which, fragmented, begins
a period of decline and sad neglect. In 1974, the Italian
Government declares "La Torre" a "manufactured
building with a peculiar historical interest" and subjects
it to preservation.
Nowadays, thanks to the Municipality, the Region and the Government's
action, impressive restoration works have almost completely
brought "La Torre" back to its ancient magnificence.
The complex still has got a late-eighteenth century structure
composed of different buildings risen for the different activities
done, placed symmetrically towards the main body of the house
which closes as a ring around a central court.
At both ends of the palace front, jutting ahead, there are
two minor buildings: the "Casa del Fattore" (Bailiff's
House) and the Church.
